A Mid-Autumn Garden Of Paradise At Cheras LeisureMall

Mid-Autumn season is near when you see lanterns and mooncakes in shopping malls. It is the season for gatherings with family and friends. Every year, Cheras LeisureMall has an array of activities that centre on cultural and heritage preservation to create fond memories for shoppers. Themed “A Mid-Autumn Garden of Paradise” the overall mall decoration is inspired by the Jade Rabbit, an important folklore character of the Mid-Autumn Festival, and includes the display of rabbit lanterns to transform Cheras LeisureMall into a bunny haven! Come over here to see beautiful lanterns which will be here at Cheras LeisureMall until 15 September 2019.

My children and I were very excited and happy to see hundreds of beautiful lanterns created by participants for the lantern-making competitions, “Creative Lantern Art Contest” and “Jade Rabbit Creative Lantern-making Contest”. These are annual events organised by Cheras LeisureMall which have received enthusiastic response from the public throughout the years, and this time round, a total of RM96,000 worth of prizes are up for grabs!

The Creative Lantern Art Contest, which took place at the mall concourse during the contest period from June to July 2019, saw a participation of more than 700 participants aged between 6 and 18. The participants included students from the participating schools as well as members of the public. Winners will stand a chance to win Cheras LeisureMall cash vouchers worth up to RM46,000.

The Jade Rabbit Creative Lantern-making Contest, on the other hand, has managed to attract more than 30 participants who submitted their handcrafted beautiful rabbit-themed lantern entries earlier today. The lanterns submitted must be no smaller than 4’ x 2’ x 4’ and made using at least one recyclable or eco-friendly material. The prizes for this contest, which are worth up to RM50,000, comprise of cash prizes as well as Cheras LeisureMall and OSIM cash vouchers.

These entries will be judged by a panel of illustrious judges at the launching ceremony based on creativity, craftsmanship and final finishing, lighting effect, eco-friendly aspect, material selection, theme proximity, and overall presentation of the lantern. The prestigious panel of judges include Mr. Chin Wan Kee, Professional Sculptor Artist and Sculptor Senior Lecturer of Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, Mr. Chung Wei Fung, Art Director and Founder of Dasein Academy of Art, Ms Tan Yar Shi, Creative Arts Lecturer of Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, Mr. Khoo Boon Want, Experimental Artist and Designer, as well as Ms Shia Yih Yiing, Malaysian Fine Artist.

Mr. Subramaniam Apparow, Senior Manager (Property Division), PPB Group Berhad said, “The Mid-Autumn festival is one of the key festivals celebrated at Cheras LeisureMall as it beautifully symbolises family reunion and artistic tradition. This resonates with the company’s commitment in fostering a tight-knitted relationship with the community through the organisation of cultural activities.

With the aim of preserving traditional heritages, we have been continuously organising lantern-making competitions since the 1990s. This is done in an effort to educate and pass on this time-honoured Chinese traditional handicraft to the future generation as lantern-making actually requires great skill and craftsmanship.

We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to all the participants for their consistent enthusiasm in preserving this lantern-making heritage throughout the years. We are also glad that each year we see an increase in new participants which goes to show that our efforts are garnering more and more interest by the year.”

To add to the splendid decoration, the beautiful lanterns crafted by the participants will be hung around the main concourse of Cheras LeisureMall to create a gorgeous sea of lights, further accentuating the Mid-Autumn mood! Besides that, visitors may also head over to the Information Counter on the lower ground floor to cast a vote on their favourite lantern creation submitted by the Creative Lantern Art Contest participants to help it win the People’s Choice Award.

Other activities to add to the celebration include the Mid-Autumn-themed colouring workshop, lantern-making workshop, snow skin mooncake-making workshop, Mid-Autumn characters walkabout, “count the rabbit” contest, and not forgetting booths selling lanterns by Harma as well as an array of delectable mooncakes by Qian Yue Ting, Yu-Ai, Yong Sheng Gift Shop, Teochew Mooncakes, Baker’s Cottage, Milky Way, Oversea Mooncakes, Casahana, Hong Kong Bay, and JDX.
