Focus Point Launches World Sight Day 2017 - "Make Vision Count"

Focus Point launched its World Sight Day 2017 - "Make Vision Count" at Sunway Pyramid on 12 October 2017. Focus Point's Eye Care CSR campaign aimed at advocating eye and vision care amidst raising impairment and eye problems.

World Sight Day (WSD) is a global initiative to raise awareness on preventable blindness and vision impairment. Do you know that 80% of the world's blindness or vision impairment are preventable through early detection of eye problem? Most of these problems can be cured by treatment or surgery and some by prescribing to a pair of glasses.

At this launch of World Sight Day, shoppers can get their eyes checked to detect eye problems by the friendly staffs of Focus Point. My son and I went through the 4 different eye tests and we were glad our eyes were in good condition.

Some of the factors that causes low-vision impairment are diseases such as glaucoma, diabetes, age-related degeneration, cataracts, retinal disease and uncorrected refractive error. An estimated 15,000 people nationwide suffer from low-vision impairment based on statistics obtained from government hospitals. Due to health defects in Malaysia, 54 out of every 1000 Malaysians suffer from low vision impairment. Taking good care of our health is very important if we want to have good vision.

According to President & CEO of Focus Point Holdings Berhad, Dato' Liaw Choon Liang, WSD is a meaningful event as it synergizes  with the company's core values and business model of making people see better."This year marks our 6th year running the WSD event. We are excited and proud to be part of global effort in raising public awareness on the importance of vision care and eye health. It is also in line with the company's philosophy of giving back to society," said Dato' Liaw.

Dato' Gary Chua, President of MRCA and Mr. Ven Raman, Managing Director of Carl Zeiss Southeast Asia and Ms. Gean Fong Head of Creatif Academy of Art & Design supported this event.

The Creatif Academy ofArt & Design was invited to help bring the theme "Making Vision Count" to life by creating a 3D eye sculpture to depict the realities of eye care.

Dr. Hoh Hon Bing (consultant Ophthalmologist & Surgeon) shared the latest eye health insights and age-related eye problems. I was happy to see Dr. Hoh because he was my doctor who performed LASIK on my eyes 15 years ago.

These days, myopia (short-sightedness) affects school children at an early age and is a great concern because high levels of myopia increases the risk of sight-threatening conditions such as Retinal detachment, Myopic Macular Degeneration, Cataract and Glaucoma at later stage of life.

Focus Point donated 1,000 pairs of optical frames to the Lions Club of KL Bukit Kiara and contributed RM 5,000 cash to the Malaysian Association For the Blind.

I think this event was great because it created awareness for people to get their eyes checked regularly for early detection to prevent vision impairment or blindness. There were also talks by doctors and fun games.
