A Woman's Journey Through Health With Menarini

Last Sunday I attended a very informative workshop and talk about a woman's health and hormonal changes from her wonder years through golden years and other health topics such as the benefits of virgin coconut oil, feminine hygiene and food that can help regulate menstruation and nourish blood. This was organized by Menarini and other sponsors.

The Emcee of the day was Christina Wong. She gave a welcome speech and told us about the health topics and activities for the day.

Dr. Ho Choon Moy, an obstetrician & gynaecologist mentioned that every child should be born fully wanted and at the right time the mother is ready for it. About 50% of pregnancies worldwide is unplanned and sadly half ended up in abortion. Abortion is very dangerous because it is done illegally in Malaysia and has lots of complications.

There are some families with poor contraceptive knowledge and ended up with many children. Each year, contraception prevents 188 million unplanned pregnancies, resulting in 112 million fewer abortions. There are many types of contraceptives, short-term and long-term contraceptives for men and women. There are also oral contraceptive pills and women should consult a doctor to know if they are suitable to take it.

Dr. Ho went on to explain the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Herpes Simplex, Syphillis, Genital Warts, HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) and HIV (Human Imunodeficiency Virus) and that Double-Dutch approach should be used.

Non-contraceptive benefits of combined pills is as shown in the photo below.

Dr. Ho talked about menopause too. What is menopause? Menopause is the final menstrual period. Post menopause is 1 year after the last menstrual period. Peri-menopause begins anytime from 40 onwards until the beginning of post-menopause. Menopause is a natural and inevitable event that happens to women at average 51 years old.

Medical attention is required after the age of 40 years when there is sleep disorder, mood changes, vasomotor systems, menstrual disorders and hot flushes. Hormone Therapy Replacement (HRT) is effective and can relieve the menopause systems, helps protect post-menopause osteoporosis, and prevents Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM). GSM happens due to the decreased levels of estrogen hormone which causes thinning of the vaginal tissue, resulting in vaginal dryness and a decrease in the natural bacteria at the vaginal area.

Women should have a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, healthy eating to be happy even after menopause because there are many more years to live. Average Malaysian women's life expectancy is about 77.3 years old.

After lunch, there was a mock cheque presentation to Ragunathan family to help them because they have 11 children and Ragunathan earns RM 1,200 per month.

The next talk was on the benefits of drinking 2 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil daily to reduce weight by Ms. Shayne Lim, a nutritionist.
